Meet Sylvain Poulin, MBA, CPA, CA

When professional rigor meets the power of a technology platform.

At Stamped, we believe that the best technology tools are worthless without top-caliber human experts to bring them to life. That’s why today we introduce Sylvain Poulin, MBA, CPA, CA, the person who ensures every day that every file we deliver meets our clients’ most demanding expectations.

1. Sylvain, can you introduce yourself and tell us about your professional background?

Of course! I’m a CPA-CA with varied training and experience, spanning compilation, review and audit, as well as taxation. I’ve always been drawn to environments where rigor and precision truly make a difference for clients. What brought me to Stamped was a vision that spoke to me immediately: to completely rethink the way CPAs work, putting technology at the service of expertise rather than the other way around. For more than six years now, I’ve led all of our audit and assurance services, from methodology through to final delivery, while being actively involved in the development of our platform. Contributing to building a tool that truly reflects reality on the ground is something I care deeply about. It’s a role I’m passionate about every day because it combines the two things I love most: professional rigor and innovation.

2. What exactly is your role at Stamped, and how is it different from that of a director at a traditional firm?

My title is Executive Director, Audit and Assurance, but my role goes well beyond technical supervision. I safeguard the quality of our services, both to meet the standards of our professional order and to elevate our offering for clients. I define the methodology applied to every file, and I train and mentor our team. What makes this role unique is that I work in symbiosis with our technology platform, and being close to our development team puts us in a position to genuinely change things. Concretely, I can focus my energy on what truly matters for our clients: analysis, professional judgment and strategic advice, all while working on the technological future of our profession.

3. How does the Stamped platform change your day-to-day as a CPA?

The transformation is very concrete. As soon as a client is onboarded to our platform, everything becomes centralized: document requests, communications, working papers and the final financial statements. Our artificial intelligence engine automatically maps accounting data from QuickBooks or Xero to the right financial line items, with built-in error detection. For me, that means I can have a real-time overview of all our files. Technology handles the coordination, and my team focuses on expertise. Our AI also provides tremendous support to our team, both operationally and administratively. The administrative burden, which takes up a great deal of time, is thereby greatly reduced.

4. What types of engagements do you manage, and which clients does Stamped primarily serve?

We cover the full range of year-end services for Canadian SMBs: compiled financial statements, review engagements, audits and corporate tax returns. Our clients are mainly growing businesses that need quality financial statements, whether for their banking relationships, their investors, or to make business decisions based on reliable numbers. What sets us apart is our ability to deliver these engagements much faster without sacrificing quality.

5. Speed of execution is often presented as a Stamped advantage. As a CPA, how do you reconcile speed and quality?

Speed without quality has no value. Our speed comes from eliminating unnecessary friction, not from cutting corners on substance. Our platform automates repetitive, low-value tasks — document collection, data entry and mapping, the automatic adjustment of retained earnings that don’t reconcile at opening, and the generation of financial statements — which lets our team invest its energy where professional judgment is indispensable. Regulatory compliance remains non-negotiable. Every file goes through a rigorous review before final delivery. The difference is that we reach that stage having saved considerable hours on the preceding steps.

6. What qualifications and expertise do you personally bring to your clients?

Our clients know they can call on an experienced team that understands not only the numbers, but also their business reality. We’ve developed a methodology that our entire team applies consistently, which guarantees a uniform and predictable experience for our clients. On my end, years of experience mean I can provide support on the more complex elements. For example, I get involved in the more demanding files — first-time reviews and audits, complex transactions and restructurings — where experience and judgment make all the difference.

7. How does collaboration with clients work on the Stamped platform?

It’s one of the aspects our clients appreciate most. On our online platform, the client has access to a dedicated space where they can see the progress of their file in real time, submit their documents, respond to our team’s requests and consult their final deliverables — all accessible from any device, anywhere. The platform guides the client through the steps that require action on their part. Transparency is total, and it significantly reduces our clients’ stress. Communications and documents are centralized in one place, which eliminates lost information, speeds up decision-making and puts an end to endless email chains. For our clients, it’s a radically simpler and smoother experience than what they’ve known elsewhere, since they can prioritize their business and get back to us when they have the time. We also have exciting projects on the way that will make collaborating with our clients even easier.

8. In your view, what are the biggest challenges SMBs face when it comes to accounting services today?

I see mainly three. First, timelines: too many businesses receive their financial statements several months after year-end, which sometimes creates stress that could be avoided. Second, cost: fees can be high for a growing SMB that needs more than a simple compilation — a review or an audit. And finally, accessibility: cost is one thing, but finding a CPA who is competent, available and able to meet your needs is increasingly difficult. At Stamped, we tackle all three at once: reduced timelines thanks to our technology, optimized costs thanks to our operational efficiency, and a senior team that is accessible and responsive. That’s why our clients stay with us year after year.

9. How do you see the CPA’s role evolving in an environment increasingly automated by artificial intelligence?

I’m convinced AI will free the CPA, not replace them. Simpler tasks like data entry, reconciliations and standard report generation will increasingly be handled by AI. That’s excellent news, because it lets us refocus on what clients really need: strategic advice, financial analysis and support in their business decisions. At Stamped, we’ve already been living this transition for several years. Our AI takes on the repetitive work, and our CPA team focuses on interpretation, communication and added value. Tomorrow’s CPA will be more of a strategic business partner. And that’s exactly what we strive to be for each of our clients.

10. A final word for the entrepreneurs or executives who want to learn more about Stamped’s approach?

I simply invite them to come talk to us. Not so we can give them a pitch, but so we can understand their challenges and show them concretely how we can help. At Stamped, we’re a team of CPAs who have rethought the accounting experience from A to Z to make it faster, more transparent and more focused on our clients’ success. Switching firms or trying a new approach is a decision that deserves thought, because it represents time — something we as entrepreneurs don’t always have. Some are looking for guidance and great service; others simply want to become compliant in the simplest, fastest way possible. For those who prefer it, contact can be minimal and boil down to a few questions in writing and electronic signatures; for others, it’s the guidance and meetings they value, so they’re not just a client number. In the end, we adapt to your needs to make the experience as simple and pleasant as possible. What we hear most often after a few months of working together is that our clients wish they had made the change sooner. If you’d like to learn more, don’t hesitate to contact us today!
