How to Prepare Your Documents for Tax Filing
Complete guide to preparing your tax documents as an individual or entrepreneur.

Whether you’re an entrepreneur, self-employed worker, or salaried employee, you must file tax returns for both Quebec and Canada. Even without income to report, filing provides access to refundable tax credits.
As an individual
All Quebec residents with income must submit declarations to provincial and federal governments. The April 30 deadline applies annually.
Required documents
- Previous year assessments and Social Insurance Number
- T4/Relevé 1 forms from employers
- T3/T5 interest and investment statements
- Relevé 31 for housing credit
- Childcare expenses, medical expenses, charitable donation receipts
As an entrepreneur
1. Determine declaration type
Business income appears on personal T1 forms (due June 15); T2125 forms show business results (due April 30).
2. Organize documentation
Retain previous tax returns, classify invoices by expense type, document assessments, and organize transactions chronologically.
3. Claim eligible deductions
Deductible business expenses include: office supplies, equipment, business insurance, advertising, professional fees, business meals, mileage, and utilities.
